Georginio Wijnaldum breaks leg in Roma training, doubtful for World Cup

Georginio Wijnaldum is a major doubt for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar after breaking his leg in a Roma training session on Sunday.

The 31-year-old midfielder joined Roma earlier this month from PSG, to boost Jose Mourinho’s team but he is now set for a long injury lay-off.

“Following an injury sustained during training on Sunday afternoon, Georginio Wijnaldum subsequently underwent medical tests that confirmed the presence of a fracture to the tibia in his right leg,” Roma announced on their website.

“The player will undergo further assessments in the coming days.”

The Dutch international is not expected to return to action until after the World Cup as options of surgery are still considered.

With Wijnaldum’s expected absence, Jose Mourinho will turn his attention to Guinea’s Amadou Diawara, Gambia’s Ebrima Darboe, Lorenzo Pellegrini and Nemanja Matic.

Roma will hope to build on their winning start to the Serie A season when they face Cremonese on Monday night.
