Cape Verde and Malawi advance to the knockout stages of the 2021 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations after gathering four points from the group stage games.

Cape Verde are paired with Cameroon, Ethiopia and Burkina Faso in Group A. They defeated the Walia Ibex in their first game by a goal. They lost their second game against the Stallions (0-1) and drew Cameroon (1-1) in their last group stage fixture.

They sit third with four points behind Burkina Faso who also has four points. However, Burkina Faso is ahead on the basis of head to head rules.

Cape Verde has qualified through third place qualifications after Sudan and Guinea-Bissau lost to Egypt and Nigeria respectively. The same thing for Malawi who also finished third in Group B with four points after losing to Guinea (0-1), but defeated Zimbabwe (2-1) and drew Senegal (0-0). Malawi joins Cape Verde in the round of 16.

Four teams are expected to qualify to the next round through third place qualifications.

With Sudan finishing third in group D with one point, and Comoros sit third in Group C with 3 points, Cape Verde in Group A and Malawi in group B with four points qualifies to the next round.
