Premier League: Fernandes, Son scoop historic September awards

Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes and Tottenham Hotspur forward Heung-Min Son both won big in the Premier League awards for the month of September.

United captain Fernandes won the Goal of the Month award for his brilliant strike in the Red Devils’ 1-0 win over Burnley at Turf Moor, while Son took home the Player of the Month award for his brilliant performances.

Fernandes’ well-struck one-time volley off a sublime pass from veteran defender Jonny Evans ensured the Portuguese star equaled the record for the most goal of the month wins as he tied former Spurs winger Andros Townsend for three accolades apiece.

He first won the award in June 2020 for his bullet hit against Brighton and Hove Albion before claiming his second honor with a world-class chip against Everton at Old Trafford.

Son’s POTM triumph is his fourth win since joining the Premier League, and it keeps level with some big names like Alan Shearer, Thierry Henry, Dennis Bergkamp, Frank Lampard, Paul Scholes, Mohamed Salah, Marcus Rashford, Jamie Vardy, and also Fernandes.

The South Korean forward had an outstanding September, netting six goals across four matches to lead his side to wins over Burnley, Sheffield United, and Liverpool, along with a draw in the North London derby against Arsenal, to maintain their unbeaten start to the season.

It signals a terrific start to the season for Spurs, whose manager Ange Postecoglou also won the Manager of the Month award, his second of his debut season in the English topflight, becoming the first manager to win the award in each of his first two months in the competition.

Elsewhere, Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez took home the Save of the Month award for his acrobatic stop in their 1-0 defeat against Aston Villa.

The Spaniard produced a stunning save to deny Italy’s Nicolo Zaniolo, tipping the ball powerfully over the crossbar.
