AFCON 2021: Highlights of AFCON opener- opening ceremony and match reports
The 33rd Africa cup of nations began yesterday in Cameroon with the opening ceremony, followed by the opening match between the host and the Stallions. Later on yesterday, Ethiopia locked horns with the Blue Sharks.
The 2021 Africa cup of nations started with an opening ceremony where Paul Biya, the Cameroon President gave the shortest speech ever in the opening ceremony of the Africa cup of Nations.
The event features different cultural displays from Cameroon and other countries represented in the tournament. The AFCON 2021 theme song was displayed.
The Ghanaian Reggae singer, Samini featured in the theme song. Fally IPupa, the Congolese musician thrills the spectators with a wonderful performance. After the opening ceremony, Cameroon and Burkina Faso kicked off the opening match.
Cameroon vs Burkina Faso match is the opening match of the 2021 Africa cup of Nations. The Indomitable Lions defeated Burkina Faso by 2-1. The stallions took the lead after 24 minutes through Sangaré, following a cross by Traore. Sangare’s goal is the opening goal of the 2021 AFCON.
In the space of eight minutes, Cameroon got two penalties. and both penalties were converted by the Cameroonian captain Aboubakar to give the host the victory.
Later on yesterday, Ethiopia battled Cape Verde, in a game that sees the first red card. Ethiopia defender, Bayeh was shown a red card after a foul on Traveres. Coach Abate quickly fill the void left by Bayeh by replacing Mignot Debebe (defender) with Mesud Mohammed (midfielder).
However, on the stroke of half time, Traveres scored the only goal of the game after Gari Rodrigues poked back a ball to the 18-yard box for him to nod into the back of the net.
