AFCON 2021: Eguavoen makes history in the victory against Guinea-Bissau

244views

Eguavoen makes history yesterday as the first Nigeria Coach to amass the maximum points in the group stage of the Africa Cup of Nations. He did it in AFCON 2006, Egypt and Cameroon 2021.

Augustine Eguavoen was the Super Eagles coach at the Africa Cup of Nations in 2006 when the Super Eagles won bronze medal at the Africa showpiece.

That era sees the likes of Vincent Enyeama, Joseph Yobo, Kanu Nwankwo, Chidi Odiah, Seyi Olofinjana, Mike Obi, and Taye Taiwo. During this period, Nigeria amassed maximum points in the group that comprises Nigeria, Senegal, Ghana and Zimbabwe under Eguavoen.

Again, the 56-year old achieved the same feat in 2021 in a group that has Egypt, Sudan and Guinea-Bissau. He becomes the first Nigerian coach to amass the maximum nine points in two different AFCON editions 2006 and 2021. And he could become the second coach to win the tournament as a player and coach after Stephen Keshi.

Augustine Eguavoen was replaced by Gernot Rohr after he was sacked in the wake of the 2021 CAF Africa Cup of Nations on an interim basis.

Although, the Nigeria Football Federation has appointed a new coach, Jose Peserio, he is expected to start work after AFCON.

Nigeria are unbeaten in the group phase scoring 6 goals. The Super Eagles awaits their opponent for the round of 16 today. However, they can meet Comoros in the next round depending on today’s results.
