WAFCON 2022: Fans describe Oshoala’s injury blow as ‘good, bad news’ for Super Falcons
Nigeria have been dealt a huge blow with star forward Asisat Oshoala ruled out of the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations because of an injury.
The Super Falcons announced on Wednesday that the Barcelona forward sustained a grade 2 medial collateral ligament strain during their opening Group C match against South Africa earlier this week.
Oshoala managed to play for 82 minutes in Monday’s 2-1 defeat to Bayana Bayana and the latest medical update means they will be without the four-time African Women’s Footballer of the Year in their subsequent group games against Botswana and Burundi on Thursday and Sunday respectively.
While the news shocked Randy Waldrum’s squad, football lovers on social media described it as an opportunity for the players in the team to step up and guide Nigeria to a record 10th WAFCON title.

With Oshoala out of the AWCON, let us all just agree that this competition is all over for the Super Falcons.
Making it from that group will be a big issue atm

The Super Falcons doctors and the technical crew should be held responsible for Asisat Oshoala’s injury.
This was the moment, she felt she can’t continue. How she played for 70+ minutes was surprising to me.
Hopefully, other players will step up. https://t.co/PKUtVnCGV0 pic.twitter.com/VI0ZtLEgce

The sad news is that Asisat Oshoala is out of #WAFCON2022 She’s an incredibly talented player and nobody wants to see her leave the tournament injured.
The good news is that the Super Falcons may profit from her absence.
Enjoy the paradox…— iBD10 (@booday10) July 6, 2022
