Brighton & Hove Albion have confirmed the signing of former Liverpool and England midfielder James Milner on a free transfer.

The 37-year-old will join the Seagulls on an initial one-year contract when his eight-year spell at Anfield ends on June 30.

Brighton’s head coach, Roberto De Zerbi, expressed his delight at the acquisition of the experienced midfielder.

“I’m very glad to welcome James to Brighton,” the Italian said. “He’s an excellent addition for us, and I’m sure he will help to bring us to an even higher level.”

David Weir, the team’s technical director, also said: “We are delighted that James has agreed to join us after a hugely successful period at Liverpool.”

“His experience speaks for itself with the number of games he has played and the trophies he has won throughout a decorated career.

“These games include European competition, which will be of huge value to us as we embark on our first season in Europe. We’re looking forward to working with James when the players return for pre-season,” he concluded.

The deal, which includes a clause for Brighton to extend by a further year at the end of the 2023–24 campaign, will see Milner play for his fifth club in the Premier League after spells at Leeds United, Aston Villa, Newcastle United, Manchester City, and most recently Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side.

The English midfielder departs the Reds after a successful stay where he won the Premier League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup, Community Shield, Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, and the FIFA Club World Cup.

Milner, who is outrightly the player with the third-most appearances (619) in the Premier League, will definitely bring much-needed experience for the Seagulls next season as they prepare for their first outing in European football following their qualification into the Europa League for the 2023-24 campaign.
