Tottenham forward Perisic to miss rest of season with knee injury
Tottenham Hotspur star Ivan Perisic suffered a serious knee injury in training on Wednesday, and the Croatian is expected to miss the rest of the 2023–24 season.
The 34-year-old, who joined Spurs from Inter Milan on a two-year deal in May 2022, is out of contract with the North London outfit at the end of the ongoing campaign.
Tottenham confirmed the Croatia international’s injury with a statement on their official website that said he had sustained a “complex anterior cruciate ligament injury” to his right knee.
The statement read: “We can confirm that Ivan Perisic has suffered a complex Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury in his right knee.
“The experienced Croatia international sustained the injury in non-contact training and will undergo surgery.
“Ivan will then commence his rehabilitation with our medical staff and is expected to be sidelined for the remainder of the season.”
Perisic, who has featured in all Spurs’ five Premier League games so far this season, was instrumental in their breathtaking victory over Sheffield United last weekend in his 50th game for the side. He provided an assist for Richarlison’s leveller late in the game after his corner kick was nodded in by the Brazilian.
The former Bayern Munich forward could have played his last game for Ange Postecoglou’s side, and he joins Uruguayan midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur on the sidelines as one of the two Spurs players with an ACL injury.
Perisic will now miss the North London derby this Sunday as Tottenham will visit the Emirates Stadium to take on rivals Arsenal in the biggest game of the weekend.
Postecoglou’s men are currently unbeaten in the Premier League with four wins and a draw in five matches, sitting in second place in the standings, and are one of the four teams that are still without a loss in the English topflight.
