Tottenham agrees deal for transfer of James Maddison

Tottenham have agreed a deal in principle for the transfer of English midfielder James Madison from relegated Leicester City for a reported fee of around £40 million.

The 26-year-old will sign a long-term deal with the Lilywhites after final touches to the contract are completed and a medical is undergone later this week.

Maddison will depart the Foxes after spending the last five seasons at King Power Stadium, where he won the FA Cup and the Community Shield. In 203 appearances with Leicester, he scored 55 goals and provided 41 assists.

According to reports, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy handled the deal for the midfielder himself after establishing contact with Leicester sometime last week. They beat competition from Newcastle, who were also in for the creative midfielder but cooled their interest due to the capture of Italian midfielder Sandro Tonali.

The former Norwich forward will be Tottenham’s third signing under new manager Ange Postecoglou after Dejan Kulusevski’s deal was made permanent and the arrival of Italian goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, as Spurs look ahead for a proper revamp with the aim of putting behind their disappointing 2022–23 season.
