Super Falcons bounce back to hold Canada in friendly

Nigeria held Canada to a 2-2 in another international friendly match held at the Starlight Stadium on Tuesday morning.

The Super Falcon bounced back from Saturday’s 2-0 loss to the current Olympic Games champions, with a spirited performance but a late equaliser denied them victory against their hosts.

Ifeoma Onumonu got Randy Waldrum’s ladies off to a flying start with a back heel finish as early as in the fifth minute.

The goal separated both teams in the first 45 minutes, even Canada kept the pressure on with their attacking threats.

The hosts had their breakthrough after the restart, with captain Christine Sinclair grabbing an equaliser, four minutes into the second half.

Nigeria responded immediately with a stunning shot from Rasheedat Ajibade that put them in front again and on the path to victory in the 53rd minute.

However, the 11-time African champions’ hopes were dashed when Shelina Zadorsky salvaged a draw for Canada with an 88th-minute equaliser.

The friendly matches against the North American country are part of the Super Falcons’ preparations for the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations that will take place in Morocco in July.

Nigeria will discover their group and opponents at a draw event scheduled for April 25 in Rabat.
