Super Eagles touched down at Cameroon ahead of AFCON 2021
The Super Eagles of Nigeria has arrived Cameroon for the 2021 CAF Africa cup of nations. They arrive Garoua, Cameroon in the early hours of Thursday. The Super eagles will open their AFCON campaign against the Pharaohs of Egypt on January 11, 17.00 GMT.
Interim coach, Eguavoen traveled with 25 players from Abuja to Garoua, Cameroon. They are expecting three players to join them soon, including Ighalo whose club is refusing to release him on contractual issues. The Netherland based Kolawole Desser is likely to replace the former Manchester United player if he do not make it to the tournament eventually.
On Friday, January 7, the Super Eagles will play a friendly match with the Cameroonian club, Cotonsport de Garoua in preparation for the tournament. The match will take place at the practice pitch of the Stade de Roumde, Garoua behind closed doors as reported by complete sports.
Ighalo’s absence will be another big miss following Osimhen and Dennis withdrawal from the squad. Eguavoen, in a press conference, said that it’s “a bit of worry” if the 2019 AFCON golden boot winner don’t make it to the tournament, considering the fact that Osimhen and Dennis are already out of the continental championship.
The former AFCON winner said, he maybe forced to change the playing style. Instead of playing with a striker, he might decide to use a false nine. Nigeria will open their Afcon campaign against Egypt on January 11.
