Nigeria left-back Calvin Bassey has been named Rangers’ Young Player of the Year for the 2021-22 season.

The 22-year-old joined the Gers in June 2020 after developing through Leicester City’s youth ranks and he has further established himself as a first-team player in Scotland.

This season, Bassey has played over 3,500 minutes of football in 44 matches across all competitions and his defensive contributions have helped Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men to the Scottish FA Cup final, UEFA Europa League quarter-final and the second spot in the Premiership.

In 2021, Bassey ditched Italy and England to represent Nigeria on the international scene and he made his Super Eagles debut in March 2022 during the goalless draw against Ghana in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying fixture.

At Rangers’ at the end-of-the-season award ceremony on Sunday, Bassey was honoured alongside Alfredo Morelos, John Lundstram and James Tavernier who won the Men’s Player of the Year, Men’s Goal of the Season and Men’s Players’ Player of the Year awards respectively.
