Saudi club Al Ettifaq appoint Gerrard as new manager

Former Aston Villa and Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has been appointed as the new head coach of Saudi Arabia club, Al Ettifaq, on a two-year contract.

Gerrard, who has been out of job since his dismissal at Aston Villa in October 2022 following a poor run of form in the Premier League, will take over the Saudi Pro League club once the new season resumes.

“Without a doubt, Gerrard’s presence will be an addition and a quantum leap to our league,” said Khalid Al-Dabal, the club’s chairman.

Al Ettifaq finished seventh in the Saudi Pro League last season and they were reportedly in talks with Gerrard since early June but the discussions initially broke down.

Gerrard won the Scottish league with Rangers in 2021 but found life tough in the Premier League with Villa, and his move to Saudi continues the influx of Europe based stars to the middle east.
