Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah tendered a heartfelt apology to Liverpool fans after it was confirmed that they would miss out on next season’s Champions League following Manchester United’s 4-1 victory over Chelsea on Thursday night.

The 30-year-old revealed he was “devastated” and explained there were “absolutely no excuses” to be made for their performances this season.

Salah took to social media to express his thoughts and apologize to the Reds’ fans.

The post read: “I’m totally devastated.”

“There’s absolutely no excuse for this. We had everything we needed to make it to next year’s Champions League and we failed.”

“We are Liverpool and qualifying to the competition is the bare minimum. I am sorry but it’s too soon for an uplifting or optimistic post. We let you and ourselves down.”

Liverpool started 2022–23 with a trophy by defeating Manchester City in the Community Shield, but the Reds won only two of their opening eight Premier League games.

Despite being disappointing for a large part of the season, United’s drop in form, coupled with Liverpool’s run of seven wins in eight games, provided hope for Jurgen Klopp’s side in their attempt at finishing in the top four.

However, the Red Devils, who needed just a draw against Chelsea to secure a top four spot, ended the game with an emphatic win at home, ending Liverpool’s hopes and also completing the English spots for next season’s UCL with Manchester City, Arsenal, and Newcastle United.

The Reds will also end the season without a major trophy following their exits to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup, Brighton and Hove Albion in the FA Cup, and Real Madrid in the Champions League.

Albeit his side’s poor form, Salah, who signed a three-year contract extension with the Merseyside outfit, has scored 30 goals in all competitions this season, including 19 goals in the Premier League.

Liverpool will definitely finish fifth in the league and will play in next season’s Europa League, their first appearance in the European second tier since the 2015-16 season.
