‘Rejected in Europe, accepted in Africa?’ – Fans divided over African Super League
The launch of the African Super League by the Confederation African of Football on Wednesday has got football enthusiasts talking on social media.
CAF President, Patrice Motsepe launched the new tournament during the 44th CAF General Assembly in Tanzania alongside FIFA President, Gianni Infantino.
Dr. Motsepe disclosed that the tournament will offer $100m in prize money with $11.6m for the winner.
He added that the continent’s football governing body will pay each African football association $1m annually from the league’s earnings with the aim of developing football across their countries.
CAF believe that the new Super League will make African football teams more competitive financially with their European counterparts, but a section of the fans see the move as colonisation with Africa being the Guinea pig while others lauded the initiative for the economic values.
I hope there is Nigeria team in this new african super league.. it will be huge for african football.. i support it

A rich man can cannot control a fellow rich man because both have money. A rich man can only control a poor man who’s seeking riches!
African Super League is officially On! Rejected in Europe and accepted in Africa!

It’s unbelievable clubs are still quiet on this especially West African clubs.
This super League is not the answer to continental club football. https://t.co/B5D0fcMd27— Nokware Deduamni (@kanabus) August 10, 2022
You want to develop African football but it’s limited to 24 clubs. What will now happen to the local leagues, CAF Champions and CAF Confederation?
They’ve seen Africa as testing ground 🤦🏾♂️. Super league isonu.

Alright I’ll bite, I’ll talk about the African Super League. Let’s start by saying that in an increasingly connected world, I am absolutely not opposed to the idea. Hell, it can obviously even excite the football fan that I am. But as with everything, the devil is in the detail.

Many African leagues are not even being followed now that’s why the Super League is coming to place, if there were truly much fans of many other clubs who wouldn’t play in it, then there would be an uproar like that of Europe.
Now I’m indifferent about it but honestly

This Super League thing is not fair, this thing is robbing a number of African teams an opportunity to participate at the highest level, every team should get a fair opportunity to play in this tournament

Great initiative the African Super League, the funds/funding will definitely help our football emerge from the shadows. Only thing that worries me, is the year,y $1m grant meant for further development of the game that all MA’s will receive. Money and administrators, EISH!!!!

I would like to know how the African Super League will promote the local leagues.
I can imagine removing Al Ahly or Zamalek or Wydad and Raja or Simba and Yanga from their respective leagues will that not kill the leagues?
I would like to get that point clearly
