Mane, Mendy and Aboubakar scoop AFCON 2021 individual awards
AFCON 2021 came to a close on February 6 with Senegal duo of Mane and Mendy, and Cameroon’s Aboubakar scooping the AFCON 2021 awards.
Senegal defeated Egypt on penalties 4-2 to win the 33rd edition of the Africa Cup of Nations. Both sides were unable to convert their chances in the normal time, with Gabaski pulling spectacular saves including a penalty, to deny Senegal from taking the lead.
After playing a 0-0 draw after 90 minutes, the game entered into extra-time which also ended 0-0. Penalty was used to separate both sides with Senegal putting four past Gabaski and Egypt scoring two. Senegal beat Egypt 4-2 on penalties, to win the continental championship.
Senegal lifted the trophy afterwards. Before the winning team were handed over the trophy, Mane, Mendy and Aboubakar were summoned to receive their individual awards.
Cameroon’s Vincent Aboubakar won the best goal scorer of the tournament. He scored 8 goals in the tournament and provided one assist.
Senegal’s Edouard Mendy scoop the best goalkeeper award after conceding just two goals against Equatorial Guinea in the quarterfinal and Burkina Faso in the semi-final.
Senegal’s Sadio Mane won the best player of the tournament scoring three goals and providing two assists.
