Uruguayan forward Darwin Nunez will wear a new jersey number at Liverpool starting next season, as announced by the club on Thursday.

The former Benfica striker has been handed the No. 9 shirt last worn by Brazilian star and former Liverpool striker Roberto Firmino, who recently joined Saudi side Al-Ahli following the expiration of his contract with the Reds.

Nunez moved to Anfield last summer in a six-year deal worth about £89 million. However, he has found life tough in England but has equally shown glimpses of the qualities that prompted Jurgen Klopp’s side to splurge the cash on him.

Following his big money move, which made him the club’s record signing, he was handed the No. 27 shirt since the No. 9 which he previously worn at Benfica was taken by Firmino.

The 24-year-old finished his first season with 15 goals and four assists in 42 games with the Reds, including nine goals in the Premier League.

He becomes the latest player in a long list of stars to wear the iconic jersey, including the likes of Fernando Torres, Robbie Fowler, Andy Carroll, Djibril Cisse, El Hadji Diouf, Nicolas Anelka, Ian Rush, and more recently, Christian Benteke, Rickie Lambert, and Iago Aspas.
