Kenya’s long distance star Chepkirui gets four-year doping ban

Kenya and Africa’s 10,000 metres champion Joyce Chepkirui has been banned for four years after being found guilty of doping.

Chepkirui has been punished for an Athlete Biological Passport (ABP) violation.

She has been on suspension since July 2019 and the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), on Wednesday, upheld her four-year ban which started in June 2019.

Chepkirui is renowned for winning gold in the 10,000 metres event at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and the 2014 African Championships in Marrakech.

She is expected to forfeit medals, prizes and appearance fees she received between April 2016 and August 2017, which include a bronze medal in the Boston Marathon in April 2016.

Chepkirui’s ban comes as a blow for the Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya, who will pay 2,000 Swiss Francs to the World Athletics as contribution for its legal costs and other expenses.

Kenya remains a high-risk country for doping in the global rankings, as they remain in category A of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
