Iwobi: Everton fans give confidence even if I miss a pass
Everton midfielder Alex Iwobi is enjoying the applause he is getting from fans at the club after their Premier League opening match against Chelsea on Saturday.
Iwobi delivered an impressive performance in the Toffees’ 1-0 loss to Chelsea, having played the entire duration with his key presence in the middle of the park.
The Nigeria international completed two tackles, and three interceptions and also made the highest number of passes (38) with a key dribble for Frank Lampard’s team.
Iwobi told the club’s website: “The fans are always giving me that confidence that even if a pass doesn’t come off, they’ll clap and applaud the effort.
“It’s something that’s helping me go into games that, even if I do miss, I’ll have the confidence to try something again.
“It worked out against Chelsea, I was able to make some forward passes and hopefully it leads to some assists in the next game.”
The Super Eagles star maintained that they did not deserve to lose all three points to Chelsea after Jorginho’s first-half penalty separated the two teams at Goodison Park.
However, he believes Everton are ready to challenge in the Premier League with a trip to Aston Villa, next up in their schedule.
“I don’t think like we deserved this result,” Iwobi said.
“We defended really well, we were unfortunate with the penalty but, other than that, we defended as a team and created a couple of chances. On another day, those chances go in.
“It shows we can compete with one of the best teams in the Premier League. If we can compete against them, we can compete against anyone.”
