FORMULA ONE: Hamilton’s future hangs on Abu Dhabi inquiry
Lewis Hamilton is keeping the world waiting to hear whether he would continue in the sport.
While during the 2021 preseason there were delays in his contract negotiations with Mercedes, this time Hamilton would make his decision based on the outcome of the inquiry into the controversial season ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
Max Verstappen claimed the F1 title for the first time after taking victory in Abu Dhabi under sensational circumstances.
Race director Michael Masi, allowed the few cars between Verstappen and Hamilton to unlap themselves while the safety car was out on the penultimate lap. Hamilton was under the impression the safety car would stay out until the end of the race that would ensure victory. However, the safety car was ordered to enter for the final lap.
Verstappen had fresh tyres, while Hamilton was unable to defend with significantly worn tyres, as the Red Bull driver raced to the win and the title.
As stated by Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff in the aftermath, it has left Hamilton with little trust in the FIA. The seven-time champion has been silent on the situation, but reports suggest that the results of the inquiry would need to convince the Brit that it is worth competing in the coming season.
Despite losing the title on the final lap, 2021 was a milestone year for the 37 year-old who became the first driver to pass 100 pole positions and 100 race wins.
There is still one more significant milestone that has slipped Hamilton’s grasp, one that will require his participation next season to attempt to win a record breaking eighth Formula 1 title.
