Fernando Gago: Former Argentina & Real Madrid midfielder appointed as new Boca Juniors coach

Former Real Madrid midfielder Fernando Gago has been appointed as new head coach of Argentine club Boca Juniors.

The club announced the appointment of Gago on Monday, with the former Argentina international making a return to the club he spent the first 15 years of his career – 13 with the youth team and two with the senior side.

The 38-year-old, who made his professional debut with Boca in 2004, replaces his compatriot Diego Martinez, who stepped down in September after three straight losses in Argentina’s top flight.
The club made Gago’s appointment public with a post on social media. They wrote: “Gago signed his contract with Boca and is the new Xeneize coach. Welcome home, Fernando.”

During his professional career, Gago had spells at Real Madrid, Roma and Valencia, before returning to Argentina to play for Boca and Velez Sarsfield, where he ended his career.

Boca will be Gago’s fourth managerial job with the former defensive midfielder having coached Aldosivi, Racing Club, who he led to the Argentine Champions Trophy and the International Super Cup, before heading to Chivas, where he finished with a record of 17 wins, 11 draws, and 10 losses in 38 matches.

The 35-time Argentine champions are currently 10th in the Argentine Primera Division with 24 points after 17 matches.
