Fans celebrate Haaland after equaling Adriano & Messi’s Champions League record

Erling Haaland made headlines after netting five goals in Manchester City’s 7-0 bashing of RB Leipzig in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 on Tuesday night which ensured their easy passage into the quarter-finals.

The towering Norwegian scored a first half hat-trick before adding a brace after the break to take his tally for the season to 39 goals.

Haaland’s five goals matches Lionel Messi’s tally in a 7-1 Barcelona win against Bayer Leverkusen in 2012 and Luiz Adriano in a 7-0 Shakhtar Donetsk win over BATE Borisov in 2014.

Haaland was substituted after 63 minutes and fans questioned Guardiola’s decision to do that, with some believing the Catalan tactician did not want Messi’s record to be surpassed as he could have scored more if he remained for 90 minutes.

Regardless, Haaland still broke a number of records on Tuesday night such as surpassing Kylian Mbappe to become the youngest player to score 30 Champions League goals and the fastest player to reach 30 Champions League goals with 25 matches.

The Norwegian star  is also the fastest player to score five Champions League goals (57 minutes) compared to Luiz Adriano (82 minutes) and Messi (84 minutes).
