Nigeria athletics star Ese Brume believes her success at the Commonwealth Games will inspire young girls in Nigeria.

Brume recorded a leap of 7.0metres in the women’s long jump final to win Nigeria’s 12th gold medal in Birmingham after successes from Tobi Amusan and the women’s 4x100metres relay team earlier on Sunday.

Her leap set a new Commonwealth Games record for women’s long jump and the gold medal comes barely a fortnight after he claimed silver at the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Oregon.

Amazingly, Team Nigeria’s 12 gold medals at the 2022 Commonwealth Games were claimed by women in various sports.

When asked about the impact of her recent success and the women’s success at the Commonwealth Games to Nigerian girls, Brume told BBC Sport Africa: I know this will be an inspiration for them.

“Of course, when you see someone you look up to doing well, you want to definitely be like them. So this is going to motivate and inspire them.

“I hope it works.”

The 26-year-old who has a personal best of 7.17metres in Long Jump, said the Games achievement is a reward for her consistency.

“This is one thing I really wanted – to get the Games record,” she added.

“This is special for me, because it shows consistency. It shows the hard work of all those that have supported me, and my coach who has been backing me up.

“Sometimes it’s about how you’re able to show that what you’re doing is not a fluke.”
