EPL: Chelsea held to a 1-1 draw by Brighton

Chelsea missed the chance to go second on the Premier League standings as they were held to a 1 – 1 draw by Brighton at Amex Stadium. This means that Chelsea’s winless run in the league has stretched to 4 games.

A loss to Manchester City over the weekend dealt a heavy blow to Chelsea’s Premier League title hopes, 13 points off the pace before the trip to the Amex Stadium. The Blues had the chance to climb back up to second place with victory against Brighton.

However the home side made the brighter and breezy start of the two after three minutes on the clock with Jakub Moder coming close to getting the lead for the Seagulls.

Chelsea, realizing the hosts won’t make their trip an easy one captured their first chance after a quiet opening quarter of an hour as Cesar Azpilicueta tried to get the Blues ahead with a long range strike that didn’t trouble Robert Sanchez.

Hakim Ziyech, Chelsea’s Moroccan star who has been getting some game time of late, put the visitor’s ahead on the 28th minute, the same time his national side were in action 7500 kilometers away at AFCON 2021. Azpilicueta’s shot and Ziyech’s goal were the only shots on target for Chelsea during the first half.

Brighton were looking to level matters especially given how much better they started the second half, Kepa Arrizabalaga keeping out Alexis MacAllister shot. But he could not stop what followed as Adam Webster scored on the 60th minute via a corner kick to level the scoreline.

Chances were few and far between for the visitors and simply could not find a way through. Hopes of victory faded as the hosts kept up the same energy throughout the game. Thankfully for Chelsea, Brighton could not find the much needed goal to gain the victory, a point salvaged for Tuchel’s side after a 1-1 stalemate.
