EPL: A brilliant attacking spectacle ends level at Villa Park
After battling it out in the 3rd round of the FA Cup, Aston Villa welcomed Manchester United to Villa Park in the Premier League this time around.
On that occasion, the Villans conceded a fateful early goal which resulted to them getting beat 1-0 and getting knocked out of the cup.
While manager Steven Gerrard would have been keen to not do the same this time around, history has a way of repeating itself and sure enough, Bruno Fernandes breached the Villa defense inside six minutes.
Keen to build on their momentum and perhaps a loss of confidence from the goalkeeper, United crafted another opportunity shortly afterwards but this time, Emi Martinez atoned for his error to produce a fine save.
David De Gea was called into action in the other goal later on in the half, but rose up to the challenge and kept out a powerful header from Emi Buendia. United should have doubled their lead on the hour mark after Elanga was gifted position in a dangerous area, but he could only send his shot wide. His blushes were spared shortly afterwards when Bruno Fernandes produced a clinical finish to help himself to his second for the evening.
Just when it appeared that Aston Villa were finished, Jacob Ramsey rekindled the Villans’ hopes with a lovely strike into the top corner. Philippe Coutinho then endeared himself to Aston Villa fans in one of the best possible ways with a finish that saw his team equalize and earn a late point as the game ended 2-2.
An impressive come-back performance by Aston Villa….
