Eguavoen to remain Super Eagles Coach, Amuneke as assistant

Despite the Super Eagles failure to qualify for the quarterfinal in the just concluded AFCON 2021, the NFF has retained the services of Austin Eguavoen as the coach of the Super Eagles.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has announced that Austin Eguavoen will remain the coach of the Super Eagles. This perhaps end the possibility of Jose Peserio becoming the Super Eagles gaffer.

The NFF had earlier announced that Peseiro will take charge of the Super Eagles after AFCON 2021, but it appears that will not be the case. Eguavoen will continue as the coach of the West Africans.

After the sack of Gernot Rohr, Eguavoen was selected to lead the Super Eagles to Cameroon. The 56-year old was able to get the team to the round of 16 where they were defeated by the Carthage Eagles, and crashed out of the tournament.

Despite that, NFF has revealed he will continue as the Super Eagles coach, as Nigeria get set to face Ghana in Qatar World Cup playoffs in March. Eguavoen will be assisted by former Nigeria international, Emmanuel Amuneke. Salisu Yusuf has been named second assistance coach and head coach of Nigeria Chan’s team.

Former Nigeria and Everton defender, Joseph Yobo, retains his position as the third assistant coach and Aloysius Agu as goalkeeper coach.

A statement from the NFF reads:

“The Nigeria Football Federation on Monday announced the reconstitution of the technical crew of the senior men national team, Super Eagles, with Augustine Eguavoen staying as interim technical adviser while former Nigeria World Cup star and former U20 coach, Emmanuel Amuneke is drafted in as immediate assistant to Eguavoen.”

“One of the most garlanded footballers to have come out of Nigeria, Amuneke scored both goals that won Nigeria the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations final match against Zambia in Tunis, scored the goal that won Nigeria and Africa’s first Olympic football gold medal in 1996 and played in the 1994 and 1996 Fifa World Cup finals, scoring two goals in USA 94.

“As coach, the electrifying winger qualified Tanzania for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt and led the Taifa Stars in the finals. He is a member of both the Fifa and Caf Technical Study Groups.”
