The Gambia made a fairytale debut in the Africa Cup of Nations, defeating Mauritania 1-0 in Limbe to tie for first place in Group F.
After ten minutes, Ablie Jallow scored the game-winning goal, controlling Musa Barrow’s pass with one touch before finishing from 25 yards (22.86 metres) with his second.
Late in the first half, Mauritania surged fiercely but failed to significantly bother Gambian goalkeeper Modou Jobe.
The Scorpions are now level on points with Mali, who overcame Tunisia one goal to nil earlier in the group stage match day.
The Gambia has finally taken its position at the top table of the group in this year’s continental tournament, forty years after first attempting and failing to qualify for Africa’s most prestigious athletic event.
The Gambia is the lowest-ranked team in the Nations Cup in Cameroon, sitting 150th. They will face Mali next.
