Cyriel Dessers likely to be called up as a replacement for Ighalo
Cyriel Dessers who plies his football career in Feyenoord is expected to be called up to the Super Eagles for the AFCON 2021 tournament as a possible substitute for Odion Ighalo.
Ighalo is one of the 28 players invited into the Super Eagles team for the AFCON tournament, although the 32-year-old has yet to appear in camp as of this writing.
The ex-Watford attacker might be unable to represent Nigeria in the AFCON due to his club in Saudi Arabia, Al-Shabab’s unwillingness to release him.
With that in mind, Super Eagles coach Austin Eguavoen enlisted the help of Eredivisie star, Cyriel Dessers as a possible backup plan.
The exclusion of the Feyenoord star was originally surprising, given that he has eight goals and one assist to his name in 20 appearances for his club this season.
The 27-year-old forward, who was born in Belgium, has one cap, which he earned over a year ago.
Dessers may finally get another shot at the Super Eagles, given that Ighalo is set to miss out.
On January 11, the Super Eagles will face Egypt in the first match of their quest for a fourth AFCON title.
