Benni McCarthy’s appointment as part of Erik ten Hag’s backroom staff at Manchester United has generated reactions from Africans across social media.

McCarthy has been tasked to coach Man Utd strikers in attacking plays and positioning which include five-time Ballon d’Or winner, Cristiano Ronaldo.

The former AmaZulu head coach started his coaching career as an assistant at Sint-Truiden in 2015 and he was named the South African Premier League’s Coach of the Season in the 2020-21 season.

The South African joins Mitchell van der Gaag and Steve McClaren, Eric Ramsay and Darren Fletcher in Ten Hag’s backroom set-up.

The return of the former West Ham United and Blackburn Rovers striker to England comes as good news to football fans across the continent, with some tagging it as a new leap for South Africa who boosts of former Al Ahly coach Pitso Mosimane and victorious Bayana Bayana’s Desiree Ellis in the coaching world.
