Barcelona midfielder Gavi is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines after picking up an injury while on international duty with Spain.

The Catalan club confirmed today that the 19-year-old has suffered a complete tear of his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and an associated injury to the lateral meniscus.

Barcelona also revealed that Gavi, who was subbed off halfway through the first half of La Roja’s 3-1 win over Georgia on Sunday, will undergo surgery later this week and will likely miss the rest of the 2023–24 football season.

In a statement released on their official website, Barcelona said: “Test carried out on Monday morning on the first team player Gavi have shown that he has a complete tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and an associated injury to the lateral meniscus.”

“The player will have surgery in the coming days after which a new medical update will be released.”

Gavi, an integral part of both the Barcelona and Spanish national teams, has made 15 appearances this season for his club side, with two goals to his name. In the qualification rounds for next year’s European Championship, he played in all eight of Spain’s eight group games and helped with two goals.

After his proposed surgery, the 2022 Golden Boy Award winner now becomes a major doubt for the Euro 2024 tournament, which he helped Spain qualify for as Group A winners with 21 points from seven wins and one defeat, and also the Olympic Games in Paris, France, next summer.
