Spanish sixth seed, Rafael Nadal enjoyed a trouble free opening to his 2022 Australian Open campaign today, dismissing world number 66 American, Maros Giron in straight sets as he chases a record breaking 21st Grand Slam title.
Nadal who is the only former Melbourne champion left in the men’s draw, dropped just eight points on his first serve and claimed 34 winners, including seven aces to Giron’s ten enroute to a 6-1, 6-4, and 6-2 win.
Nadal faced just two break points in the match, saving both of them as he looks to become only the second man behind Novak Djokovic, to win all four Majors at least twice.
Nadal is making his return to Grand Slam tennis after a five-month layoff due to a foot injury.
