Amokachi points out problems of Nigerian football
Super Eagles legend Daniel Amokachi has called on the government and the Nigeria Football Federation to sort out the administrative problems in the country’s football structure, and not put the blame on the coaches.
Amokachi pointed out lack of planning and structure, troubled domestic league, absence of developmental youth programme for players and coaches as the main problems facing the country’s football.
After the Super Eagles failed to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in March, the NFF dismissed the entire coaching crew of the national team and Amokachi has disclosed that such a decision could happen again if they don’t find solutions to the ‘bigger issues’.
“Keshi gave opportunities to some local players and one of them [Sunday Mba] won the Afcon for Nigeria,” the former Everton striker told BBC Africa.
“A Nigerian or foreigner as the next coach is their [NFF’s] decision to make. But let’s not deviate by looking at a coaching solution from our bigger issues.
“We always react when we fail to qualify or perform at major tournaments because shortcuts will not get you results.
“Let’s sort all the fundamental issues of administrative problems – lack of planning and structure, our troubled domestic league, absence of a developmental youth programme and retrain our youth coaches with modern methods – then we can start reaping the rewards.
“Anything away from tackling these problems and we will definitely return here to complain again next year.”
