Recent news from Nairametrics claimed the Confederation of African Football (CAF), has stated its wish to boost the prize money for the winner of the 33rd edition of its flagship competition, the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Dr Patrice Motsepe, the CAF President, said this on Tuesday night in Yaoundé, Cameroon, at the AFCON 2021 draw. The President also announced that the players from the team that wins the Africa Cup of Nations in 2021 will get prize money apart from the country.

“We want to boost the prize money, and we’re in talks with sponsors,” Motsepe added, “because we have to show the world that African football is as good as, if not better than, the rest of the world.”

“When players qualify, they become demotivated because they have no idea how much they will earn in incentives.”

“These are some of the things we’re working on.”

CAF distributed about US$14.2 million in prize money to the best eight teams at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, which took place in Egypt.

According to reports, the winner of the 2019 AFCON tournament got US$4.5 million dollars, US$2.5 million for the runner-up, US$2 million for third place, and US$2 million for fourth place.

The quarter-finalists at the tournament shared US$3.2 million, with US$800,000 going to each of the four teams that scaled the AFCON2019 quarter-finals.
