315views

Malawi and Senegal were separated by a point going into this Group B fixture. The Flames of Malawi were looking to progress into the knockout stage in this competition for the first time ever, more so after winning their last game.

The Lions of Teranga who have not been at their best since the start of the tournament were the first out of the blocks with a goal attempt, but the Malawi defense stood in the way.

From then on, Malawi kept on raiding team Senegal in search of a goal to take them a step closer to their dream. The 129th world ranked Malawi side kept on hounding the defense of the Lions of Teranga and they came close on several occasions, but nothing came of those attacks. Chance after chance fell for the Flames but they could not get a breakthrough.

At halftime, the two nations could not still be separated in their first ever meeting in the African Cup of Nations.

Having beaten Zimbabwe in their last game and held the tournament favorites to a draw in the first half, the Flames of Malawi continued to ask more questions after the recess. In the 74th minute, there was joy for their bench when they were awarded a penalty and they could almost already see their side in the next round. But, joy turned to despair after a VAR check led to the referee reversing the decision.

Despite all the chances they got, Malawi could not take advantage and the game ended goalless.
