AFCON 2021: The Eagles of the Carthage register a glorious win over Mauritania to secure their first 3 points

248views

Both Tunisia and Mauritania lost their opening games in Group F leaving them with no room for error and knowing fully well that a defeat for either side could likely lead to an elimination.

The 2004 African Cup of Nations champions, Tunisia made an excellent start to the game in Limbe, breaking the deadlock as early as in the 4th minute. 5 minutes later and there were two goals to the good, Wahbi Khazri with the strike, the skipper leading by example. Mauritania were left with a mountain to climb.

Tunisia could have scored two or three more in the first half, as the half was a real show of force from The Eagles of the Carthage, but they had to settle for just the 2 goals at the break.

It only got worse for the Lions of Chinguetti as Tunisia upped the ante. Their third goal was a thing of beauty, Wahbi Khazri with the brace. The former Sunderland man was a nightmare to deal with. Less than 2 minutes after scoring the third, he set up Seifeddine Jaziri for their fourth goal.

Tunisia should have made it five at the death when they were awarded a penalty for a handball by Souleymane Karamoko. However they failed to convert it as Youssef Msakni hit the woodwork, making it three successive penalties Tunisia have missed at AFCON.

A 4-0 win and three maximum points for Tunisia has helped reignite their hopes in the 2021 African Cup of Nations.
