AFCON 2021: My focus is on playing football and not individual awards- Wilfred Ndidi
The group phase stats reveal that Wilfred Ndidi is arguably the best defensive midfielder in the ongoing 2021 CAF Africa Cup of Nations. However, the Leicester city midfielder says his focus is on playing football and not individual awards.
Wilfred Ndidi played full 90 minutes in the Super Eagles first three games at AFCON- against Egypt, Sudan and Guinea-Bissau. He was instrumental in their victory against those teams. The 25-year old with his team players are looking forward to the game against Tunisia on January 23rd.
Ndidi stunning stat after the first round is impossible to overlook, for that, he is named among the best players of the group phase, but as a substitute.
So far, Ndidi has created four chances, made 12 tackles, 5 interceptions, 32 recoveries, 2 clearances, 145 accurate passes, 3 blocks and he has won 27 duels.
As a matter of fact, he has better stats than Bissouma, Mali who is listed in the best XI of the group phase, begging the question how did CAF choose the best XI of the group phase, but that’s another story.
The Leicester city star is not worried about individual awards, is concern is helping the team achieve success at this edition of AFCON as he revealed in a pre-match conference of Nigeria vs Tunisia.
“The team will approach the game as we did in our three games. We want to play as a team, help each other and achieve results. I am focused on playing football and not individual awards.” -Wilfred Ndidi told the media.
Ndidi also speak on the problem with Nigerian Journalists- he said he has no issues with the Nigerian journalists, but complained about the timing.
“I have no issues with Nigerian press. It’s just about the timing. I don’t come for training and you come into my face, I’m not ready for that. I just want to train.”
Ndidi is expected to lead the Super Eagles midfield tomorrow, when they take on the Carthage Eagles in the round of 16.
