Sierra Leone's loss to Equatorial Guinea confirm Comoros qualifcation to the knockouts of AFCON 2021
The Coelacanths makes yet another history by qualifying to the knockouts of the 2021 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations, in their first appearance at the tournament. It is a huge achievement for the small Islanders.
A country with the population, less than a million has done the impossible by first, qualifying for the 2021 CAF Africa Cup of Nations, and then moving past the group stage, in a group that includes Ghana, Morocco, and Gabon. This is a historic feat achieved in style, thanks to Equatorial Guinea and Ivory Coast.
Comoros qualify to the round of 16 of the tournament with just three points, which they got after their historic win against the Black Stars of Ghana.
The Coelacanths lost to Gabon in their first game, by 0-1, lost to Morocco in their second game 0-2. After the Morocco game, it appears as if the Debutant dream to move past the group stage will not come true.
However, they did not give up, they upset the Black stars in the final group phase fixture by defeating them 3-2. The historic win against Ghana gave them the much needed three points to push them to the next round.
This achievement won’t have been made possible without the help of Ivory Coast who thrashed Algeria 3 goals to one and Equatorial Guinea who defeated Sierra Leone one goal to nil in Group E.
