AFCON 2021: Aubameyang, not part of the Gabon squad against Ghana due to suspected heart problem
Aubameyang hope to play in Gabon’s 1-1 draw against the Black Stars of Ghana was dashed after a suspected heart problem.
The former Arsenal captain missed out in the first game against Comoros after testing positive for covid, but he was back in training and ready to make impact in today’s game.
That could not happen after he was ruled out of the game, due to scan results that showed suspected heart problems.
The scans were conducted by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) on Aubameyang and two other Gabonese players, Axel Meye and Mario Lemina. The scan result reveals cardiac lensions, and, therefore, he was ruled out with the two other players Though the players are back in training, CAF could not afford to take any risks, after the medical examination results.
That said, the Panthers were able to secure four points without their star after round two of AFCON 2021.
They defeated Comoros in the first round of the group phase, and then fight back to drew Ghana in the 88 minute courtesy of Jim Allevinah’s goal.
Gabon is now on four points, two points behind Morocco who leads by six points. Gabon will battle it out against the Atlas Lions when they meet on January 18.
A point from that game will cement their place in the second position.
But with the four points, they are in a good position to qualify to the next round. Even if there are surprises at the final round of the group stage, which starts on January 17, Gabon have a good chance to qualify through third place qualifications.
