AFCON 2021: An absolute classic in Garoua as Comoros write history against the Black Stars

300views

Both Ghana and Comoros came into their final group match after having unsatisfactory starts to their African Cup of Nations campaigns, although the Black Stars could still finish in second if they picked up all three points against their opponent and if the outcome of the other Group C clash went in their favour.

But it was a dream start for Comoros as El Fardou Ben who applies his trade at Red Star Belgrade, outfitted Ghana’s defense and slotted one in for his side within the opening minutes of the match.

Kamaldeen Sulemana and Andre Ayew attempted to press for the equalizer. However, the captain was deemed to have committed a foul and was therefore given his marching orders after a lengthy VAR review.

Despite being a man up, Comoros could not add to their lead. Ali Ahamada came off the bench for the injured Ben Boina and the scores still remained the same before the break.

After the break, 10-man Ghana came out on the offensive. However their rivals found their rhythm and were stringing together penetrating passes in the final third to double their tally, Ahmed Mogni with the goal at the 61st minute.

The West Africans managed to pull one back thanks to an own goal by Ahmed Mogni who put the ball at the back of his own net after an attempt from Richmond Boakye. Keeping the pressure on Ali Ahamada, Ghana capitalized from a set piece to level the score, Alexander Djiku with the goal.

But Ahmed Mogni had the final say as in the 85th minute, he put his side ahead with the match ending Comoros 3 – 2 Ghana.

  1. Not taking anything away from Comoros; I think it was a shambolic performance by the Ghanians and horrible call of red card by the ref….
