AFCON 2021: Algeria and Ivory Coast to pay a fine of 5000 USD after pitch invasion

In a media release by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) disciplinary board, Algeria and Ivory Coast will pay a fine for 5000 USD each after pitch invasion by supporters.

At the end of the match between Algeria and Ivory Coast, the pitch was invaded by dozens of supporters. The chaotic pitch invasion was triggered by an Algerian supporter. Consequently, the CAF disciplinary board has fined Algeria 5000 USD.

Ivory Coast too was fined 10,000 USD for the pitch invasion by their supporters, but 5000 USD is suspended provided such incident does not repeat itself.

Cameroon was issued a warning for providing insufficient security officials for the match. The warning also serve as a stern reminder to strictly comply to the CAF safety regulations.

It was reported that about 40 supporters invaded the pitch, majorly from the east stand and the security operatives was not sufficient to control the chaos. This was revealed in the CAF disciplinary board media release.

The Algeria vs Ivory Coast game sealed Algeria’s AFCON 2021 fate. Their 3-1 lost to the Elephants sent them out of the tournament.

After the game, an Algeria supporter invaded the pitch. That gave the Ivory Coast supporters the impetus to also enter the pitch and celebrate the victory.

Algeria focus is now on the world cup play offs against Cameroon, while Ivory Coast will battle it out against Egypt for a place in the quarterfinals of AFCON 2021 on January 26, 17.00 local time.
