Transfer Deadline Day: Matheus Nunes to wear jersey No. 27 for Man City

Portuguese midfielder Matheus Nunes has been given the jersey No. 27 by Premier League defending champions Manchester City following his move from Wolverhampton Wanderers on Friday, the summer transfer deadline day, the club announced.

The number was last won by Nunes’ compatriot Joao Cancelo for two seasons before he switched to the No. 7 jersey, and it was also previously  worn by Brazilian striker Jo (2010-2011) and former Zimbabwe international Benjani Mwaruwari (2008-2010).

The 25-year-old signed a five-year deal with the treble winners for a fee of £53 million and he becomes City’s fourth signing of the transfer window following the arrivals of Mateo Kovacic, Josko Gvardiol and most recently Jeremy Doku, taking their spending to a little above £216 million.

“The opportunity to work under Pep Guardiola, one of the greatest managers ever, and alongside some of the best players in the world was something I couldn’t turn down,” Nunes said.

“I’ve learned so much during my season at Wolves and I’m excited to continue improving in the Premier League, a division which brings the best out of me.

“I’m really excited to get going, meet the fans and hopefully be a part of plenty more success at City.”

Nunes, who joined Wolves in August 2022 from Portuguese heavyweights Sporting Lisbon for £42.2 million, departs the Molineux in a club-record sale deal that also guarantees them a 10 per cent sell-on fee on any future profit City make on him.

The Portuguese international played 41 times for Wolves, scoring once and providing one assist. He made 36 appearances in the Premier League for Wolves, including two this season already.

Nunes made his Portugal debut in October 2021 and was a part of the 26-man squad that represented the European nation at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

He is expected to fill the big void left by City talisman Kevin De Bruyne after the later suffered an injury in their Community Shield loss to Arsenal and is expected to be out until the new year.
