CAF confirms date for AFCON 2023 qualifying draw

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has picked Tuesday, April 19 for the draw of the group stage qualifiers for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire.

The preliminary qualifying round took place in March with Sao Tome and Principe, South Sudan, Botswana, Lesotho, Eswatini and Gambia advancing into the group phase.

The group games are expected to commence in June 2022 with Matchdays 1 and 2 followed by Matchdays 3 and 4 in September 2022 and the final group games are scheduled for the last week in March 2023.

48 countries are set to participate in the group stage of the qualifiers and they have been classified into four pots based on their current position in the FIFA World ranking.

The participating teams will be drawn into 12 groups of four (Group A to Group L) and 24 countries are expected to qualify for the 2023 AFCON that will take place between June and July 2023.

Meanwhile, the final draw for the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations will hold on April 24, in the host country Morocco while the draw for the 2023 African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifiers will be on April 28.
