Senegal eye consecutive AFCON finals

356views

While they may have conceded their first goal at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in the quarter-finals, Senegal would be hoping to remain clinical in front of goal as they head to the semifinals on the back of their 3-1 win over Equatorial Guinea.

This may be a scary prospect for any team that stands in the way of the Lions of Teranga who are looking to claim their first AFCON title. They can do so by getting past Burkina Faso in the semifinals, which could also see the Senegalese participate in a consecutive AFCON final.

More of the same display they put on during a fairly comfortable outing against Equatorial Guinea in the quarters would be warmly welcomed as they edge closer to history.

Senegal are not the only ones chasing history. Burkina Faso will not make their task easy as they are looking for a chance to win their first AFCON title.

The Stallions have been on a steady strut since their opening match defeat to hosts Cameroon. They needed a penalty shootout against Gabon in the round of 16 and they advanced to the last 4 with a single goal against Tunisia.

The deeper teams go in the competition, the tougher their matches become. As in the case against Tunisia, one goal could do for the Stallions to gallop into the final if they don’t concede against Senegal.

While they didn’t cross paths in the last edition of the Africa Cup of Nations, Burkina Faso’s 2017 appearance before that was an impressive one where they also reached the semifinals, this after reaching the final in 2013. This is evidence that Burkina Faso can step up to the occasion when needed. This will be their third semifinal in 4 appearances at the tournament.

Senegal would be the Stallions biggest test so far and the prospect becomes even tougher when considering they have never defeated the Lions of Teranga in four attempts.

History beckons when Senegal and Burkina Faso collide on Wednesday at Stade Omnisport de Douala, but only one of these teams can have their name go down in the books as an AFCON 2021 finalist.
