AFCON 2021: Egypt are through to the quarter-finals after beating Cote d’Ivoire in an intense encounter

328views

Egypt beat Ivory Coast 5-4 in a penalty shootout to advance to the quarterfinal round of the Africa Cup of Nations.

It was a really high-quality shootout from both sides on the whole, just with the exception of that Bailly penalty. Mo Salah hits the winning penalty to send the Pharoahs through to AFCON quarter-finals as Eric Bailly misses the only spot-kick in the shootout after an entertaining 0-0 draw.

The finale was somewhat harsh on the Manchester United defender Bailly, who had performed superbly at the back while sporting a rugby scrum cap on his return from a head injury.

Both sides had chances in an entertaining 120 minutes of action, with Badra Ali Sangare and Mohammed El Shenawy both enjoying fine games.

The Pharoahs have only scored two goals all tournament, but the Egyptians are marching on!

Egypt begin their celebrations as they now look forward to a quarter-final with Morocco on Sunday.
