AFCON 2021: AFCON is the most important tournament to me – Mohamed Salah
The Liverpool forward might have won the most prestigious titles in the world like the EPL and the UEFA champions league, but the AFCON title is the most important to Mo Salah.
Salah came close to winning the tournament in 2017 when they lost to Cameroon in the final 1-2. Here is another opportunity for the Pharaohs to win the tournament this year. However, they face a serious challenge against Ivory Coast in the round of 16.
Mo Salah speaking ahead of the round of 16 match against Ivory Coast said the most important tournament to him is the Africa Cup of Nations.
He told the media that the trophy he wants to win the most is the AFCON title because it is very difficult to win. He came close to wining it in Gabon 2017, but here they are again, aiming to win it for the 8th time. This is not just Salah’s ambition, this is the goal of the whole Egyptian squad.
“I lost it in Gabon 2017 against Cameroon in the final, but I can assure you that it is the trophy that I want to win most. I work to win it and that is the story with all the Egyptian players present here.” Salah told the media.
“AFCON is an extremely difficult competition and from the start, you have seen that even the best teams are struggling to win.” The Liverpool striker added.
Salah also believe their game against Ivory Coast tomorrow will not an easy game. And they will have to win this game first, before thinking of the revenge against Cameroon.
“Before thinking of revenge against Cameroon, we will have to overcome several giant sides,” he said.
“Against Cote d’Ivoire it won’t be easy, but our team is gaining momentum. It will be a very tight match,” the 29-year old concluded.
Egypt will face Cameroon in the semifinal provided they defeat the Elephants in the round of 16 and Morocco in the quarterfinal, and Cameroon defeat Gambia in the quarterfinal.
