AFCON 2021: “No way, we won’t give Gernot Rohr credit” – Eguavoen
Eguavoen was named the Super Eagles interim coach following the sack of Gernot Rohr. He says the former Super Eagles coach deserves credit in their success in Cameroon so far.
The West African sides were not considered as favorites following the events in the wake of the 2021 CAF Africa Cup of Nations.
Gernot Rohr the coach that qualified the team for the Africa biennial showpiece was sacked few weeks to the competition. Key players like Osimhen, Balogun, Dennis, and Ighalo were unable to make the tournament. It looks as if Nigeria were in for a rough ride at Cameroon.
However, the Super Eagles took the continent by storm. They are the only team in the competition to amass the maximum points in group phase, even favorites like Algeria, Senegal were not even close to the success of the Super Eagles in the group phase of the tournament.
Augustine Eguavoen, said, in the post-match conference in the match against Guinea-Bissau that the German football manager deserves credit for the fact that he is the source of this team, performing excellently at AFCON.
“There is no way we are not going to give Gernot Rohr credit, because he (Gernot Rohr) is the one who put this team together.” Eguavoen told the media.
“We inherited a team about 98% Gernot Rohr put together. So, there is no way we are going to leave Gernot Rohr out of this”
In addition, the coach said winning the AFCON title is not just about him, it is about everyone that play a role to make it happen.
“He did a good job putting this boys together and if we win the Africa Cup of Nations is to everyone and not just me alone”. The 56-year old added.
Nigeria has since appointed a new coach, Jose Peseiro, but Eguavoen was given the green light to coach the Super Eagles at the 2021 CAF Africa Cup of Nations. He has done an excellent job so far.
He won bronze at Egypt, 2006, but the eye of the gaffer is on the title this year.
