AFCON 2021: As the last match of group A comes to an end, the Stallions make it to the round of 16
With an impressive 1-0 victory over Cape Verde, Burkina Faso were looking to make it to the round of 16 in the 2021 African Cup of Nations when they took on Ethiopia.
Having lost their two opening fixtures, Ethiopia’s hopes of advancing to the knockouts rested on overcoming their opponent, as well as the outcome of the other Group A match.
Both teams had opportunities in the opening minutes, the Burkina Faso keeper nearly gifting their rivals with the opportunity to go ahead. But on the 24th minute, Cyrille Bayala put his side 1-0 up. Sofiane Ouedraogo kept his side up with some brilliant goalkeeping as the halftime break loomed.
It was an exciting start to the second half as Ethiopia were awarded a penalty due to a handball by Steeve Yago in the box which was confirmed after a VAR check. Getaneh Kebede stepped up to expertly slot the ball into the bottom corner.
Ethiopia were more lively as they were looking to go ahead, but Burkina Faso did well to keep their rivals at bay.
The match ended with both sides sharing the spoils, finishing Burkina Faso 1 – 1 Ethiopia.
Topping Group A, Cameroon would head into the knockout stage with Burkina Faso who finished in second.
