AFCON 2021: Points split between Gambia and Mali
They both came into their second match in Group F of the 2021 African Cup of Nations locked on three points, battling for the top spot. Gambia who are making their debut at the tournament had a fairytale start and wanted to keep their momentum going.
It was not the fastest start to the game with the teams starting out reserved.
Mali asked the questions early, but were not serious enough to have their opponents shaken. Gambia then rattled the crossbar with a long range strike.
Things were left all even with no goals for the opening half of the game.
The second half was full of incidents with VAR needed to check on some pushings in the box. The referee awarded a penalty to Mali with Ibrahima Koné putting it away, as the match was heading towards its last 10 minutes.
Referee Samir Guezzaz was asked by VAR to check a handball in the box by Mali. The penalty was given and Gambia were back level.
1-1 the final result, with both teams now heading into the final round of group matches.
Though I didn’t get the chance to watch it
