AFCON 2021: Nigeria is not one of the favourites to win the AFCON title- Troost-Ekong
The Super Eagles vice-captain hits the nail on the head as he claims Nigeria is not one of the favorites to win the continental championship during an interview with BBC Sport. He also declared in the interview that AFCON is not different from the Euros, World cup, and Copa America.
Troost-Ekong is making his second appearance at the African cup of Nations. He was part of the team that won bronze at the 2019 edition after losing to Algeria, the eventual winners, in the semi-final. Nigeria football fans feel Nigeria can improve on the bronze medal and win the title this time.
However, the 28-year old claims Nigeria are not one of the countries to win the tournament. According to him, it puts the Super Eagles in a good position, i.e., they are not under pressure; they will take it game after game.
“We’re not one of the favorites, which I think could be a good position for us to be in.”
The Watford player also speaks about the atmosphere and the relationship at the camp.
“There’s a brotherhood in the team. Every day is exciting. It feels like one big family.”
Troost-Ekong speaking with BBC Sport also gave his comments on the disrespect towards Africa cup of nations. He said Euros or any other tournament is much respected than Afcon. That needs to change. Africa cup of nations deserve respect too.
It is on the same level with Euros, Copa America, and world cup. As a matter of fact, it deserves the same media coverage and excitement.
“If it was the Euros or any other tournament, I don’t think there would be any kind of conversation like this. That would be ludicrous.”
“It’s on the same level as a World Cup or the Euros or Copa America. A lot of the exciting players in the Premier League are African. To see them all together defending their countries will be an exciting tournament, whatever people say.”- Ekong told BBC Sport.
The Nigerian defender will lead the defense line against Egypt on January 11, and the Netherlands born Nigeria footballer wants Salah who will lead the Pharaohs forward line far away from the goal as possible.
“I hope he stays as far away from us and our goal as possible – Troost-Ekong told BBC Sport.
“This season he’s obviously been on fire and we all know how good he is, but at the same time I’m very confident in our team.”
After the Egypt game, Nigeria will lock horns with the Falcons of Jedaine on January 15 and end the group stage campaign on January 18 against the Djurtus.
