Mauritania coach, Didier Gomes Da Rosa, announced his final 28-man squad for the 2021 Africa cup of nations, which starts on January 9 in Cameroon. The squad is a mix of local and foreign based players, with the local based players having the lowest ratio.
In a squad dominated by foreign based players, eight Mauritania local based players were able to make the cut. They include the three goalkeepers, Babacar Diop (FC Nouadhibou), Mbacke Ndiaye (Nouakchott Kings), Mohamed El Mokhtar (AS Douanes); three midfielders – Mohsen Bodda (FC Nouadhibou), Mohamed Soueid (FC Nouadhibou), Beyatt Lekweiry (AS Douanes); two forwards; Hemeya Tanjy (FC Nouadhibou), Idrissa Thiam (ASAC Concorde).
The surprise inclusion in the squad is the 16-year old Beyatt Lekweiry who plays for the Senegalese top flight, AS Douanes.
He will be the youngest player in Cameroon 2021, and if he gets to play. He will be the youngest player to play in Afcon after Shiva N’Zigou who played for Gabon in a group stage game at the age of 16 years and 93 days.
Mauritania will kick off their Afcon 2021 campaign against the Gambia on January 12 before taking on the Carthage Eagles on January 16. Four days later they will play Mali at the Japooma stadium in Daoula.
The Lions of Chinguetti are making their second appearance at the Africa biennial showpiece. Their first appearance was in 2019 where they failed to make it out of the group stage.
